How to change my toilet?

Changing a toilet can be a relatively straightforward DIY project if you have the right tools and follow the correct steps. Here's a general guide on how to change your toilet:

Tools you'll need:

  • New toilet
  • Wax ring
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Hacksaw or PVC pipe cutter
  • Bucket
  • Sponge or rags
  • Silicone caulk
  • Putty knife

  • How to steps:

  • 1. Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl.
  • 2. Disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the tank using an adjustable wrench.
  • 3. Remove the nuts securing the base of the toilet to the floor bolts, and lift the toilet straight up and off the bolts.
  • 4. Use a putty knife to scrape off any remaining wax from the flange (the hole in the floor where the toilet sits).
  • 5. Remove the old flange bolts from the flange, and install the new ones if necessary.
  • 6. Place the new wax ring on the flange, ensuring that it is centered and level.
  • 7. Install the new toilet by carefully lowering it onto the flange bolts, ensuring that they pass through the holes in the base of the toilet.
  • 8. Tighten the nuts on the bolts with an adjustable wrench, but be careful not to overtighten, as this can crack the porcelain.
  • 9. Reconnect the water supply line to the bottom of the tank, and turn on the water supply.
  • 10. Allow the tank to fill, and check for any leaks at the supply line or the base of the toilet.
  • 11. Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the base of the toilet to create a watertight seal.
  • 12. Trim the excess bolts with a hacksaw or PVC pipe cutter.
  • 13. Clean up any excess wax, caulk, or water with a sponge or rag.
