My contractor left the job site, what should I do now?

Contact the contractor in writing and keep a record. Read your contract for timelines and payment terms. Photograph the site as it stands. If they do not return, get advice on your options and have the remaining work assessed. We regularly finish jobs other people walked away from.

If your contractor has left the job site without finishing, there are several steps that protect you and get the work moving again.

  1. Contact the contractor. Try to reach them, in writing, to find out why they left and when they plan to return. There may be a valid reason, such as an emergency or a materials delay. If they do not respond, move to the next steps.
  2. Review the contract. Check the terms you agreed, including timelines and the payment schedule. If the contractor has breached the contract by leaving, you may be able to end it and recover costs.
  3. Document the situation. Take photos and notes of the site as it stands. Keep every message. This matters if there is a dispute later.
  4. Seek advice. If you cannot resolve it with the contractor, get legal advice. A lawyer can explain your options under Ontario law and whether a claim makes sense.
  5. Find someone to finish. If the contractor will not complete the work, have the remaining work assessed and get a written quote from a reputable contractor. Check references and qualifications before you hire.
